Fats have become an increasingly important nutrient for horses. Research in the past decade plus has begun to show fats elicit many positive benefits to horses. Specifically, the omega fatty acids have received much of the research attention due to their known positive affects in other species. In this week's podcast we explain what exactly the fatty acids are. We especially focus on the omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and discuss their importance to equine nutrition and health. We explain some of the most current research and just how much of the fatty acids your horses should be receiving in their diet. Finally, we give some tips on how best to maximize your horses' nutrition to ensure they have a proper balance of these omega fatty acids.

This week we continue the discussion of muscle disorders. We specifically discuss PSMM Type 2 and how it differs from last week's topic, PSSM Type 1. We then talk about some other common muscle disorders that are similar to PSSM, but are actually quite different. We highlight how these disorders affect horses and how they are currently being diagnosed. Diet does play a key role in managing these types of horses. However, while many muscle disorders may appear similar, their dietary needs will differ. Thus, we do highlight this. Finally, near the end we do give some final tips on how you can best manage your horses that may be suffering either with PSSM Type 2 or some of the other common muscle disorders.

Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy (PSSM) is a genetic disease affecting many breeds of horses. There are two identified types of PSSM, PSSM Type 1 and PSSM Type 2. In this week's podcast we focus in on PSSM Type 1. During the podcast we discuss what PSSM is and how Type 1 is identifiable in our horses. We address which horses are at risk of this genetic disease and what it means to their health and happiness. Diet is a major factor in reducing the severity of PSSM and thus we give tips on how best to manage them. We also talk about other ways owners can help reduce the severity of this disease. The bottom line is, with careful management, PSSM horses can and do live healthy and happy lives.
